| Rahul may visit Rajouri on May 17 | | Pahari convention to be a litmus test for Pahari leaders | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, May 7: All India Congress Committee General Secretary Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit Rajouri on May 17 to participate in Pahari Convention being organized by Jammu & Kashmir Pahari Cultural and Welfare Forum (JKPCWF). Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already given his consent to participate in the convention. Sources told Early Times that Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Rajouri on May 17 and he has already been approached by Pahari Congress leaders of the state. Sources said, Members of Parliament Madan Lal Sharma, Choudhary Lal Singh and General; Secretary and spokesman of Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee Ravinder Sharma are trying hard to bring Rahul Gandhi to Rajouri so that the Pahari show become a grand one. JKPCWF headed by its Chairman Syed Mushtaq Bukhari is going to organize Pahari Convention on May 17. The forum has reportedly invited Rahul Gandhi and Omar Abdullah. Sources said that Omar Abdullah has already given his consent while Rahul Gandhi is yet to confirm his visit. When contacted, Syed Mushtaq Bukhari said that they are expecting Rahul Gandhis participation in the convention and are trying to bring him to Rajouri. He added that Chief Minister has given his consent and they are expecting positive response from Rahul Gandhi in near future. "Madan Lal Sharma, Lal Singh and Ravinder Sharma are trying hard to bring Rahul Gandhi to Rajouri", he said. Meanwhile sources said that the convention is equally important for common Pahari people and Pahari leaders of different political parties as the forum has reportedly fixed targets for each leader to gather people in the convention. "Each leaders according to his political post has been given a target to gather people", sources said adding that Paharies are trying hard to make the convention a historic one so that a strong message is served to Government of India. It is pertinent to mention here that the main objective of the convention is to highlight the demand of scheduled tribe for which Pahari community is striving for the last many decades. Gujjars and Bakerwals were granted ST status in early nineties. Following which Paharies intensified their struggle. "We were also in the list of recommendation for ST status at No 1", Syed Mushtaq Bukhari said adding that some politicians at New Delhi played a trick and deleted this community at the top and granted the status to Gujjars and Bakerwals only. "Now we have pledged to get this status and we will chalk out plan for future course of action", he added.
