| "Migratory Birds: Ambassadors of Biodiversity in Crisis" | | World Migratory Bird Day 2010 | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 8: On eve of fifth World Migratory Bird Day,WWF-India state office Jammu and Kashmir in collaboration with the department of Wildlife Protection, Government of Jammu and Kashmir organized an awareness programme at Kala Kendra Jammu. A large number of wildlife specialists of Jammu along with the school students drawn from different educational institutions of Jammu participated in the programme. On the occasion a drawing and painting competition and a photo exhibition on migratory birds was held. In the painting competition about 24 educational institutions of Jammu participated were 300 pictures of migratory birds were exhibited. The main objective of both these activities was to highlight the importance of migratory birds and need for their conservations. World Migratory Bird Day is organized across the globe every year to highlight the importance of migratory birds which are also the ambassadors of biodiversity and peace. At present these migratory birds are under sever threat due to degradation of their habitat as a result of indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources. Many migratory birds use the wetlands across the globe as their breeding and wintering grounds. At present these wetlands are also under sever threat as a result of various unplanned development activities and also because of the emerging threat of climate change. World migratory bird day is also an occasion to highlight the importance of these wetlands as habitats of migratory birds and need for their conservation. A photo exhibition, which was inaugurated by ex-Cabinet Minister Gulchain Singh Charak and Prof. YR.Malhotra ex-vice Chancellor of Jammu University. Our efforts to protect the habitats of migratory birds otherwise these rare birds will stop coming to the state. Chairperson WWF V.P.Sharma said that this year drought killed several species of birds and the public should make efforts to provide water to these birds as was the practice in the past. P.K.Singh while speaking said that the department has taken up a study to ring the rare bar headed geese at Gharana and study its migration patterns. Gulcahin Singh Charak while speaking said that he has taken up the mission to protect the birds and launch a campaign in all villages and schools to protect the birds. He said due to several actions of human beings these birds are becoming extinct. In painting competition Ankit verma of Dewan Devi public school stood first, Nigibh of Vidya Peeth Public higher Secondary school stood second and Tannu of Govt. Girls Higher secondary School Mubarak Mandi stood third. The panel of judges were Lalit Gupta of institute of Music and fine Arts, Batra ex-Principal institute of fine Arts R.Mehra ex-secretary Academy of Arts and Culture. The exhibition of the pie cutes of migratory birds was held in there galleries of Kala Kendra. The pictures of various migratory birds taken by Dr.C.M Seth, Director WWF, Tahir Shawl Wildlife Warden, Jamm-Kathua, Guldev Raj Wildlife photographer and pankaj Chandan, project Manager, WWF-India were exhibited. These pictures depicted the beauty of migratory birds in their natural habitats from Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu. In the pictures loss of habitats and threat to these birds were captured in the photos. All those who attended the exhibition were shocked to see the deplorable condition of Gharan wetland and pleaded for its management and protection.
