Majalta people welcome water tanker for area
5/9/2010 11:38:50 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
UDHAMPUR, May 9: A meeting of people of Majalta was held today wherein block and tehsil level heads of various political parties, intellectuals, NGOs and prominent members of civil society took part. RS Pathania, a noted lawyer and a prominent political activist of the area chaired the meeting. In the meeting, the people hailed the state government for providing a special water-tanker for Ramnagar and as many as 77 hand-pumps for Udhampur district. It was in this very backdrop that the people decided to defer tomorrow's 'Majalta bandh' for which a call had been given a week earlier.
At the same time, people were of the unanimous view that one tanker for such a big Ramnagar sub-division cannot effectively meet water requirements of the arid areas in the worst-ever drought-hit PHE sub-division. They demanded separate water-tanker for Majalta and another one for Ramnagar. They also expressed doubts if the newly-sanctioned hand-pumps are going to be distributed on political considerations. It is fact that majority of existing hand-pumps in the area have dried up as they were ordered to be dug out at locations without any technical survey. The locations selected earlier had been least beneficial to the public-at-large as they had been selected by vested political interests to please individuals and not the general people. The people present during the meeting spared no words in decrying the PHE authorities for supplying contaminated water to people of Manwal, Chaini, Telay, Devi Bani and other villages as water from a nearby cremation ground was over-flowing into a duct-tank. Many government institutions, like schools, PHCs, Anganwadi centres, are bereft of water supply. The authorities have done least in repairing and replacing the weathered and shattered water-lines in the area. The people called for immediate overhaul of the entire PHE hierarchy in Ramnagar.
They also expressed displeasure over usage of PHE premises in Mansar for a political function of a mainstream political party, a few days back. Prominent among others who addressed the meeting included Sushil Sharma, Block President NC, Romesh Gupta & Chain Singh BJP, Shankar Dass BSP Shokat Ali PDP, Kuldip Singh, Mohd. Din and Ranjit Singh of Congress.
