Security grid in Srinagar upgraded on Durbar opening eve
5/9/2010 11:39:57 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 9: Additional companies of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in various areas of Srinagar city to prevent separatists and others from kicking up incidents of violence tomorrow when the government offices reopen in the state's summer capital after six months.
A senior police officer, while confirming that the security grid in the city has been further upgraded, said that additional companies of security forces had to be deployed following the call given for shutdown by the Kashmir Bar Association.
He said that separatists too have plans of provoking people to take to the streets as part of their anti-government campaign.
Asked whether the government had reports that groups of youth may resort to stone pelting the police officer said that effective measures were to be taken against those found indulging in stone pelting on security forces.
Senior police officer said that during the last three months more than 300 youths had been arrested and scores of other stone pelters had gone underground adding that search was on for those having gone underground.
He said if the government felt the need, some miscreants besides some separatists and their supporters could be taken into preventive custody to ensure incident free Monday.
He said the security forces have been directed that once separatists had plans of taking out rallies and processions, leaders of these separatist camps be kept under house arrest so that they failed to get an opportunity for inciting people to resort to violence.
The officer said that besides this the security forces and the troops have been told to intensify their "seek and destroy" operation in the entire state, especially in areas still infested by militants.
