Early Times Report
Jammu, May 10 : Islamabad has come under fresh pressure from the American Government over the need for a cr ack down on terrorists in North Waziristan. Apart from the US secretary of State Huillary Clinton's veiled warning to Pakistan against any delay in operations against the terrorists the US military Co-mmander in Afghanistan, Gen. McChrystal conveyed to the Pakis-tani Army Chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, during a recent meeting, that Pakistan should begin amilitary offensive against the Talibans and the Al Qaeda in North Waziristan. The warning is seen as a turnaround in the US approach towards Pakistan. It is a change from polite encouragement to definite instructions. The demand for a military crack down on the terrorists in North Waziristan and a warning that if no operations were launched against the Taliobans and the Al Q aeda Islamabad may have to face serious consequences. In fact Washington has been awakened by the failed Times Square bombing in which a US citizen of Pakistani origin. Reports said what Clinton said and the note of caution served by Gen. Mc Chrystal have full backing from US President, Barack Obama, who seems to have been rattled by the Times Square incident. Therefore Washington wants Islama-bad to act fast against the terrorists. Islamabad does not seem to have any other alternative but to coede the demand of the US authorities. By warning that Pakistan may have to face serious consequences if in future any terror attack in America had origin in Pakistan clearly indicates that Washi-ngton may suspend military and nonmilitary aid to Pakistan. During the last several years Pakistan has escaped tot al economic break down only becuse of heavy non-military aid from the US.Even the US has agreed to release several million dollars to help pakistan to come out of its current energy crisis. The total daily demand for electricity in Pakistan is over 17000 MWs and the availability is less than 10,000 MWs. Hence Islamabad cannot but accept and implement whatever direction emanates from W ashington. At one time the establishment in Islamabad was reluctant to order intense militar y operations against the terrorists as that could prove counter productive but it had to yiled under US pressure and started oper ations against the Talibans in the Swat valley and later in South Waziristan. In these oper ations several Pakistani soldiers lost their lives. And political analysts believe that for the very survival of Pakistan Islamabad has to play a second fiddle to Washington.
