| Int'l Shooting Championship aspirant victim of govt's apathy | | | ARUN TRISAL ET REPORT KATHUA, May 9: State, National gold medalist shooter Sandeep Singh Bandral is struggling to attend International Shooting Championship to be held in Singapore from July 12, despite getting selected because none from state or centre is ready to extend him financially assistance. Successive governments' claims for promoting and boosting sports sprit among youth by encouraging sports activities in state seems to be hollow. Huge amount of budget is being spent on the account of promoting games and explore hidden talent of the sports person in state but once a player like Sandeep Singh, son of S.S Bandral of Kathua prove worth by exhibiting unparallel achievements at state as well as country level is being ignored for unknown reasons. Sandeep has played more than 30 Junior events of 10-meter air pistol in which he started his shooting by taking part as Shooter in the open state shooting championship in 2006 at Jammu where he got 3rd position when he was in class 9th in Kendriya Vidayalaya Lakhanpur Kathua, after that he took part in junior shooting championship organized by the Kathua District Shooting Association and got 2nd position. In shooting event of 10 meter air championship held by J&K State Rifle Association, he stood at 2nd position also qualified for All India Shooting Championship. Till date Sandeep has played almost 13 Shooting Championships including 6 National Shooting Championship, 4 State Shooting Championship and 3 KVS regional sports meets in Jalandhar and he got total number of 19 medals including gold, silver and bronze. Sandeep also qualified to play in the biggest national games and NSGY of India and was recently selected to international level shooting championship to be held in Singapore. The Shooter Sandeep Singh Bandral after reaching prestigious position wherein he could bring laurels for state and country is haplessly waiting for financial help of worth RS 2.5 lacs which he could not afford. Despite knocking doors of several ministers, legislatures and administration no one is virtually ready to help the poor kid out. If government could think about the rehabilitation of those crossed over for arms training against state and country then why it cannot think for extend helping hand to glowing aspirant of shooting in state. Usually ministers did not leave an opportunity to inaugurate or culminate tournaments by giving speeches in favour of sports and sports persons but when a case like that of Sandeep's cmes to fore why these so called well wishers of sports and sportspersons prefer state of deep slumber. Omar Abdulla's government should direct local administration headed by DC Sanjeev Verma to make it possible for Sandeep to join in International Shooting Championship. Senior Congress leader Manohar Singh warned that ignoring Sandeep at this stage of his carrier would amount to breach of trust with sports aspirants on the whole and to Sandeep in particular. He urged upon coalition government, especially upon minister for sports to intervene and make necessary arrangements for sending the boy to participate in event.
