'Strengthen coalition spirit to fail enemy designs'
5/11/2010 12:01:22 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 10: On the first day of reopening of offices with Durbar Move in Srinagar today the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today categorically ruled out differences between the coalition partners National Conference and Congress. More than hitting out at media, the statement apparently is to blow the 'watchful detractors' who, ruling allies think are waiting for eruption of 'misunderstanding' and 'rift' between the ruling allies.
It is in the backdrop of this 'apprehension', the leadership of the National Conference and the Congress have decided to strengthen the spirit of the coalition in order to prevent the opposition, especially the PDP, from upsetting the ruling coalition's applecart.
Party sources said that after the recent conflict between the Congress ministers belonging to the Jammu region and the NC ministers belonging to the Kashmir valley a clear instruction has been received by the leadership of both the state unit of the Congress and the National Conference that they should avoid raising any issue publicly which could be construed as a division in the cabinet on the basis of the region.
The sources said that the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has agreed to take all the cabinet ministers into confidence before approving transfers of officers posted at key places which includes the Deputy commissioners, District police Chiefs, secretaries and commissioners. Besides this Omar Abdullah has suggested to his ministerial colleagues and legislators belonging to the Congress and the National Conference not to air any view which could weaken the spirit of the coalition Government.
The state unit of the Congress leaders has also been told to stop getting divided between the loyalists and the dissidents. They have been told to unite so that the opposition did not take advantage of groupism in the Congress.
According to these sources the leadership of the National Conference and the Congress will try to persuade the Union Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee and the AICC General secretary, Rahul Gandhi, to initiate measures which could help the cash starved Jammu and Kashmir Government to concede the demand of the 4.50 lakh employees who were on war path in protest against delay in payment of arrears of 6th pay commission pay hike.
It has also been decided that the coordination committee members meet more often than not to iron out any differences over any issue. To what extent these new set of instructions on following the spirit of coalition dharma, particularly in the wake of annoyance of Congress ministers really works out, remains to be seen.
