Modern education becoming a costly
5/11/2010 11:52:36 PM
Khushwant S Ranial
The concept of education in the modern era has changed altogether. It is more based on materialistic approach than spiritual, moral and ethical values. Norms and standards have no relevance. In fact, education devoid of such healthy aspects have truly broken the backbone of educational parameters, On one hand, we forcefully acknowledge that education is the real important instrument of social mobility, social change, growth and development of both the state and society but on other hand, the means adopted and rules formulated are so much stringent that they donot stand in consonance to one others deals and requirements. Thus, we are shunning out degree holders, diploma holders, certificate holders who own them but sadly donot match the height of such things in any way. The net loss is in the form of unemployment because qualitative stuff is not available to withstand the pressure of the needs of corporate market. Alarmingly jobless youth after striking his head here and there, finally lands in depression and suicidal tendencies grow more and more.
The analytical study behind such an ever-growing and existing mess is that high cost factor in educational achievement. It has become an impediment. Those who intend to seek it could not do so due to steep hike in admission fees, followed by exorbitant charges made in the name of tuition fees and other various shady undercovered means. No doubt, our government is trying her level best in providing education to all by making it compulsory but there is definitely a missing link somewhere which widens the distance of seeker and teacher. Outnumbered schemes run by the government to attract the budding crop and then minimizing the culture of drop-outs at a rampant rate by the time educand reaches to middle standard and sometimes after the regular period stretched over secondary higher secondary, colleges and universities level, itself narrate the woeful tale. The laudable efforts cannot be underrated or underscored but there is an urgent need to evolve mechanism to plug loopholes, under the failing circumstances of which chaos which has grown beyond reparable measures now, will grow further.
It is an admitted fact that the growing load of catering the education to everyone by the state is very hard and realizing so the need of privatization arose. But the lose hands and flexible reigns of those who had been in the helm of affairs in past led to the mushrooming growth of the private educational enterprises. Instead of serving to the interests of the state and society, these institutes have become a fleeing market. Every Tom, Dick and Harry flouting all the principles norms of school management and administration pitched in crèches, primary level, school and even in ruralities and far flung areas upto middle standard schools in pitiable and hostile accommodation. The condition of private institutes is no better even in cities an building lacks toilet facilities, parking slots, ventilation, modern educational infrastructure like desks, chairs, black boards, library rooms, laboratories and above all play ground for holding morning prayers leave a side for the games and other co-curricular and cultural activities. These school buildings own small rooms crowded highly resonating with loud noise. What converses between a teacher and the taught in such a big bang noisy rooms is truly self explanatory and well understandable.
Thus, lack of proper communication develops vaccum of the knowledge and to cover this gaps, parents are left with no other option expect to opt for tuition or extra coaching classes. Again here, these coaching centres have fully exploited the situation for their own personal gains. In this mad race of competitive life, parents barely get ample scope and time to attend to their children and children are thus left with no other option except to depend upon tutorials which have gained on undue importance. No doubts, they are quite handy on one hand in sharing the burden of parents and their wards but also have become notorious, looters and necessary evil due to the minting money at will, at the expense of poor any expertise, skilled professional staff, infrastructure etc. They are deceiving the public in broad day light. Recently, to check this increasing menace and pollution, state government has announced some remedial measures like, their affiliation, staffing, reservations, quota system, infrastructure etc but such type of schemes and how have been floated earlier but couldn’t gain pragmatically. They dwindled in air, exposing corruption nexus well-established to flout all such type of formulaes. No chemistry worked to hook true culprits and help in streamlining this system. First of all very basic question that everyone seeks is that instead of according recognition or affiliation to individuals or groups, why not an emphasis is being laid to curb the culture of tutorials and tuitions? Why government donot initiate in encouraging deployed teachers to take pains deeply in their schools or respective institutions? Why government donot step into improve transfer, promotion policy and raise infrastructure and force lawful agencies to rein to check derailed examination system at board and universities level? In nutshell, the need of the hour is to stem the prevailing rot by all means so that qualitative teaching-learning process may be able to extract the best potential of educand.
