JKSCCC to construct three more cable cars
5/12/2010 11:12:04 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, May 12: Encouraged by the success of Gulmarg Gandola Cable Car (GGCC), the State Cable Car Corporation (SCCC) has decided to construct three more chair lifts-two in Kashmir and one in Jammu.
All the three projects--Kongdori, Makhdoom Sahib and Bagh-e-Bahu- projects had been approved and work will start this year, SCCC Managing Director Farooq Ahmad Khan said.
He said tendering for construction of cable car upto Makhdoom sabib shrine on the Kohimaran hills in the downtown city has been completed.
''We are in the process of taking final decision on the project and work will be commenced very soon,'' he said adding by this financial year the devotees and other tourists would be able to reach the shrine in the cable car.
Khan said the earlier survey on the 600 mtrs long project was modified. Now everything is finalised and work would start anytime.
However, he made it clear that devotees and tourists availing the cable car facility will have to pay.
The senior citizens and ill devotees are facing problem during their visit to shrine but after the construction of the cable car they will be able to reach there without any problem.
He said since SCCC is a corporation, we do not want that this corporation faces the same fate like other corporations.
''It is because of this we have decided to charge fees from the devotees using the cable car.'' About the Kongdori second, he said, the project has already been finalised.
Since we are going to bid for International winter games at Gulmarg, it was necessary to construct Kongdori second to match the international standard, he said.
The work on 1.5 km long project would also start this year, he informed.
About Bagh-e-Bahu project, Khan said, ''we wanted to construct it with private party involvement. But despite issuing tenders thrice we did not get any response from any private firm,'' he said.
However, he said, now it has been decided that the cable car will be constructed by the SCCC for which formalities and other necessary arrangements had already been finalised.
About cable car to Suliman hills, also known as Shankeracharya hills on the bank of the Dal Lake, Khan said this could not be finalised.
''Since it is wildlife area, we need No Objection Certificate (NOC) from wildlife, forest and other departments,'' he said adding, ''we also need clearance from the centre and a committee appointed by the Supreme Court.
He said no new project will be taken up before these three are completed.
