| CBI is a toothless paper tiger: BJP | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 12: The State unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today organized a public awareness workshop at Jammu for highlighting the Congress' alleged misuse of country's premier investigating agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and turning it into a toothless and ineffective paper tiger. The workshop was addressed by galaxy of state BJP leaders including BJP State President Shamsher Singh Manhas, Leader of BJP Legislature Party Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, former State Presidents Daya Krishan Kotwal and Ashok Khajuria. They all highlighted how an institution meant to check crime in the government and of whose efficiency and effectiveness every Indian was proud of, has been turned into a shadow of its former self. Giving glaring instances of the Congress' misusing of the CBI, Shamsher singh Manhas said that after coming to power in May 2004, the Congress-led UPA used CBI to get 15 cases against senior Congress leader Satish Sharma pertaining to irregularities in allotment of petrol pumps closed in a Delhi court. Similarly the UPA in January 2007 put pressure on the CBI which decided against the prosecution of former Chattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi in the cash for MLA scam. He said again in December 2008 CBI sought permission to withdraw its application filed against Mulayam Singh before Supreme Court. He also pointed out that it was CBI's non-filling of appeal in corruption case against Lalu Prasad Yadav which ensured RJD MPs refraining from voting against government in opposition's cut-motions. Manhas drew the attention of the gathering to the Supreme Court's comment on January 6,2009 that CBI is acting at the behest of the Centre in withdrawing its own application filed by it against Mulayam Singh Yadav. Chaman Lal Gupta said that CBI's clean chit to Jagdish Tytler in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case and seeking court permission to withdraw prosecution against Ottavio Quattrocchi, speak of how much this investigating agency has been misused time and again and turned into a Congress tool to serve its low political ends. He said that CBI was constituted with a clear motive and purpose to check corruption, mal-practices and misuse of power in the government but unfortunately this agency fell prey to Congress' machinations and became its puppet. Daya Krishan Kotwal also took the Congress to task for its repeated moves to politicize the CBI, thus indirectly making crime in the country a routine part of political culture. He stressed on giving a free hand to this organization in order to prove the credentials of public concern of the government at the Centre. Ashok Khajuria charged the Congress of converting CBI into Congress Bureau of Investigation. He said that the present day CBI has lost the faith of law abiding citizens and the need of the hour is to make it politics free. He said it is the politicization of CBI that the criminals are treated as VVIPs while the patriotic people are treated otherwise.
