| Govt to set up two Haats at Sonamarg, Kathua: Slathia | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, May 13: Minister for Industries and Commerce, S S Slathia today said that Government is contemplating to set up two Haats one at Sonamarg in Kashmir and another at Kathua in Jammu division to provide marketing opportunities to handloom weavers of the State. The Haats are estimated to cost Rs. 4.40 crore. The Minister was addressing at a function organized by the Directorate of Handlooms in connection with distribution of financial assistance to Marketing Societies of Primary Han-dloom Weavers Cooperative Societies. He said to maintain the quality of the handloom products and check selling of duplicate handloom products in the name of Kashmir brand, Slathia said a laboratory will be set up in Kashmir Valley. These labs would ensure quality control of handicraft goods. The Minister asked the gathering comprising members of various marketing societies to concentrate on the quality of the products to enhance marketing and acceptability which is imperative to fetch better remuneration of handicraft products. He said that government has introduced various welfare schemes for the artisans involved in handloom and handicraft sectors and asked them to come forward and harness the benefits of these schemes. He said under these schemes health insurance cover and scholarships to wards of weavers are available adding that is applicable government would provide all possible assistance to boost this sector. Slathia asked the officers of the Handloom department and other Heads of institutions Corporations to be responsive to the people's problems and ensure the proper implementation of the welfare schemes meant for the people. He said there should be no compromise in effective implementation of the programmes and policies of the government. Earlier the Minister witnessed different verities of handlooms products displayed at the earmarked place and distributed financial assistance to Marketing Societies of Primary Handloom Weavers Co-operative Societies to the tune of Rs. 71 lakh of the Srinagar district.
