| VC of CU: Kudos to former VC of JU Prof Puri | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 13: Former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Prof MR Puri has intervened in the ongoing controversy over the appointment of Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Jammu. His is a very significant and unbiased intervention. He too has advocated the need for appointing a local academician as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Jammu. In fact, he has justified the demand saying "there is nothing wrong in it. He deserves kudos for his very timely intervention. It is, however, true that he has advanced a different argument in support of his demand, though he also agreed that the Central University of Jammu must have the "best academician-cum-administrator of the country" so that the new university is developed in an appropriate manner. And, his argument is both valid and convincing. His basic argument is that a person who has served in a particular capacity at one place should not given a similar assignment at the same place second time. Accordingly, as for Prof Amitabh Mattoo, he has said that he was here as "Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University for three (read six) years" and people of Jammu are fully aware of his "weaknesses" and "strengths". He has rejected his candidature on the ground that his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Jammu would prove "counter-productive". He has supported his contention by referring to the case of the "noted educationist" K G Saydain. He has said: "K G Saydain was Director of Education of J&K State during forties. He was responsible for introducing Wardah system of basic education in the state. He was an outstanding administrator. After completion of his tenure, he left. (Ghulam Mohammad) Sadiq decided to bring him again during Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad's time. He came but decided to leave after a couple of months. He did not feel comfortable here in the new assignment". The argument advanced by Prof M R Puri against the reported decision of the authorities to appoint Prof Amitabh Mattoo as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Jammu is significant in another sense as well. The case in point is the fact that Prof Puri, like Prof Amitabh Mattoo, stands for a solution to the Kashmir problem that gives maximum possible autonomy to Kashmir, demilitarizes Jammu and Kashmir and satisfies Pakistan. Normally he should have supported the candidature of Prof Amitabh Mattoo because his coming over to Jammu for the second time would enable him to finish his unfinished agenda. Prof Amitabh Mattoo has, according to persons close to him, told them that "he wants to come back to Jammu because he still has many things to do". What he wants to do in Jammu is not a secret. He wants to come to Jammu to prepare the ground for what he stands for and what he supported in the just-concluded three-day track-II meeting in New Delhi that was, according to the EARLY TIMES, organized by the "controversial" NGO. Prof MR Puri's argument against the idea of Prof Amitabh Mattoo becoming Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Jammu needs to be taken very seriously because his is a sound argument. Acceptance of his argument would surely clinch the ongoing controversy and avert the possibility of an impending showdown.
