| Ensure fairness in conducting census operations: BJP | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 16: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has impressed upon the concerned high ups, especially the Governor, to pay their due attention to ensure fairness in the conducting of census operations in this troubled state particularly in Kashmir valley. BJP alleged that the fundamentalists and separatists in the valley have already started dabbling in the exercise by issuing highly communal and vitriolic appeals to the enumerators. Addressing a meeting of BJP activists at Durga Nagar and Rajpura in Jammu West Constituency, leader of BJP Legislature Party, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta observed that the conduct of Census is a quite important exercise because many aspects of the life including the developmental activities move around the census figures. But it is unfortunate that during the past some decades, particularly in the past over two decades the religious bigotry and virus of separatism had been playing their dirty role in any such operations. In this regard, Prof Gupta pointed out that during the last census of 2001 in this state the figures were manipulated to the amazing extent. Against the average increase in the population of about 21 percent at the national level, this increase in Jammu and Kashmir was recorded over 31 percent between 1991 and 2001. He recalled because of disturbed conditions there could not be census operations in Jammu and Kashmir in 1991 but during 2001 census the outcome was recorded which was quite amazing. Between the census of 1981 and that of 2001, against the average of about 46 per cent increase in the rest of the country, this increase in this state was put over 60 per cent. In Kupwara, increase in population was recorded as high as 94 per cent and in Baramulla it was over 88 per cent. Prof Gupta said that another significant feature of this census was that the increase in the population of the Valley was recorded astoundingly highly despite over five lakh persons including Pandits and others had migrated from valley in wake of the eruption of terrorism there. He said that it was unfortunate that the facts and figures in Jammu and Kashmir had been a casualty during the regimes of National Conference as also that of the Congress but it was highly deplorable that the Congressmen, especially those of Jammu areas always played the role of facilitators to the manipulators and protagonists of Autonomy and Self Rule. Prof Gupta asked the common people especially the activists to remain at guards and play their role in exposing the manipulators and enemies of the fairness.
