PM silent spectator of misuse of CBI: Fernandes
10/16/2006 8:38:35 PM
New Delhi, Oct 16 Stung by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's remarks about him on the Barak issue, NDA Convenor George Fernandes has written to him calling him a "silent spectator" to the "gross and unprecedented misuse of the CBI".

In the letter, he has also claimed that he did not make any derogatory remarks about President A P J Abdul Kalam, whom he held in high esteem, in the Barak matter.

"To set the record straight, it was the CBI itself in its press release dated October 10, 2006, which dragged Dr Kalam into the controversy," he said.

The JD(U) leader reminded Singh that he had written to him in May, 2004 for an immediate and speedy inquiry into the Coffingate allegations against him because "The President of the Congress party (Sonia Gandhi) had launched a malicious and defamatory campaign against me (on coffin deal)".

"Your reported remark has amused me no end. I did expect you to act independently, courageously and unearth the truth out of the lies spoken by your party's president," he said.

Reacted to a media query on Fernandes' remarks on Kalam, the Prime Minister had said "I have no other expectations from him." Fernandes claimed that the government and "other powers who control its affairs" had now started to explore other avenues to carry out a witch hunt against him by misusing the CBI to register a false FIR against him.

"My expectations that you will act honestly and independently as the Prime Minister of this country have also been belied as you have been a silent spectator to this gross and unprecedented misuse of the CBI by you government to brow beat political opposition," he said.
