EARlY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, May 19: Situa-tion in Jammu University campus today turned violent when the Vice Chancellor, Varun Sahni had to be escorted out from the Rajinder Singh Auditorium by a strong contingent of police after agitating students locked him in the hall for half an hour in protest against the establishment of police post on the campus.
The protesting students comprising girl students also entered a scuffle with the police cops as they attempted to 'gherao' the Vice Chancellor when he came out from the Auditorium. Police also resorted to mild baton charge outside the Administrative Block when a strong group of students tried to enter the building.
The trouble erupted when nearly 300 students laid a virtual 'siege' to the Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium where the Department of Buddhist Studies had organised a function to celebrate its foundation day.
As the agitating students moved towards the hall aimed at disrupting the function where the Vice Chancellor was the chief guest the University security staff and police closed down the doors and all the entry points with Vice Chancellor remaining inside the hall.
The students resorted to massive sloganeering against the Vice Chancellor accusing him of following "dictatorial policies" while the police personnel found it difficult to control the students after which additional jawans were also deployed around the Auditorium to safely escort out the Vice-Chancellor from the hall.
After a high-pitched drama which prevailed for about half an hour, the police personnel moved the VC from the auditorium with most of the protesters jeering at him and demanded that police personnel deployed on the campus should be removed as it has not only curtailed the academic freedom in the University but also students are allegedly being harassed by cops.
The Vice Chancellor preferred to reach his office chamber on foot with strong contingent of cops escorting him. However, the protesting students followed him to Administrative Block where the police stopped the protestors from marching ahead.
Carrying placards and musical instruments like dappler or tambourine, they raised slogans like "JKP Go Back Go Back", "We Want Justice," Vice Chancellor Hosh Main Aayo………" etc and warned that if the decision of establishing police post on the campus is not rolled back, the students would be forced to intensify their agitation and the onus of it would lies on the authorities. After an hour-long noisy protest, the agitating students got dispersed peacefully.
Normal class work in all departments of Jammu University again paralyzed on second consecutive today as the students and scholars collectively boycotted their classes demanding that authorities should remove the police presence from the campus.
The protests are being held under the joint platform of various student organizations, Student Scholars Committee against Police Station (SSCAP).
Meanwhile, Rakesh Chib, president Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association and member of SSCAP has flayed the statement of Vice Chancellor wherein he has stated that there is no establishment of police post on the campus.
"The DySP, who have been posted in the varsity, has written a letter for arms and ammunition for the police cops deployed on the campus. The VC has said that the cops are university guards. What is need of arms and ammunition for cops deployed on the campus?" he questioned.
He accused the Vice Chancellor of giving "misleading" statements and said, "Instead of strengthening the university examination system he main focus in on deployment of police on the campus to crush the democratic voice of the students."
