| Varun Sahni denies establishment of police post at JU campus | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 19: Denying vehemently the existence of a 'police post' on Jammu University campus, the Vice Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni asserted that the same would not be established till he is at the helm of affairs. Addressing a hurriedly called press conference, Prof Sahni said, "For the last few days some students are holding protest over the establishment of so called 'police post' on campus but in reality there is no such thing like a police post or chowki here at present." "Question does not arise of setting up a permanent police post on campus till I am the Vice Chancellor of the institution. There is only an illusion that a chowki is being set up." Clearing doubts and apprehensions about the arrangement, the Vice Chancellor said the police personnel of Jammu Kashmir Police have been called on deputation to act as second ring of security in addition to the existing security apparatus of the University, which is inadequate. Sahni said JU just have 120 personnel of watch and ward staff who are maintaining the security of the campus and at least 55 JKP police personnel on deputation from the J&K police will give added strength to the JU security staff to keep a check on movement of criminal elements in the campus. The sole purpose behind deployment of police personnel is to enable better management in maintaining security, said Vice Chancellor They are on deputation and will wear the same uniform as University security staff, he maintained adding that they will be a component of the University system and will work as per the varsity rules. "These personnel will not have the authority to arrest anybody and will work under the rules governing the University. Till they are on deputation, we will pay them salaries", said Prof Sahni. Alleging that some vested interests are hell bent upon vitiating the academic atmosphere of Jammu University, Vice Chancellor said that administration wants to accommodate genuine concerns but it does not mean that students resort to violence. He said, "There is small proportion that wants to precipitate the issues." Prof Sahni said that as far as student bodies are concerned, the University administration only recognizes JURSEA as the true representative of the students as this body is elected through a valid democratic process. "Any other organization claiming to be the representative of the students has no democratic authorization",Vice Chance-llor said.
