| Dept of Buddhist Studies celebrates Buddha Purnima | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 27: Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Jammu celebrated the Buddha Purnima with great fervour. The programme started with lightening of the lamp by Prof R D Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Foreign Buddhist monk scholars of the department offered prayer to the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha) in Pali language in an impressive manner. On the occasion, an elocution competition on the topic: Buddhism and Environmental Protection was held in which a large number of students and research scholars from various teachings departments of the university expressed their views. Among them the first three positions were secured by Sapna Sharma (Bio-Technology), Meenakshi Anand (Home Science) and Mohinder Singh (Buddhist Studies) respectively. Speaking on the occasion, Prof R D Sharma highlighted the teachings of the Buddha and congratulated the organizers for holding discussion on this grave issue of the contemporary world. He said that today when the global temperature is increasing and all religious leaders, philosophers, scientists and environmalists have failed to sort out this issue of global concern, views of the student community on the line of the Buddha's teachings generates a ray of hope. Prof Baidyanath Labh, Head of the Dept, in his presidential remarks expressed his views in making a concrete policy in tackling the issue of Global warming due to which all the living creatures are affecting badly. He said that if man wishes, he can protect the environment. It is the man who can make this earth either heaven or hell. Prof Labh stressed on the permanent strategy and determined attitude for tackling the problem. He also showed his concern for organizing similar activities for the welfare of the humankind. Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Prof Ram Nandan Singh. The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Suresh Kumar, Research Scholar of the department whereas the vote of thanks was given by Dr Sonia Jasrotia, Assistant Professor of the department.
