| Savita Bakshi weavs musical magic through Sitar | | | Sandeep Bhat EARLY TIMES REPORT Sitar, an ancient musical instrument, the modify form of Veena adorned by Saraswati Goddess of Learning and arts, is attaining new heights. The Jammu and Kashmir has not lagged behind in this sphere with having eminent performers on this instrument. It is believed that Aamir Khusro brought modification in Veena by introducing three strings and with time more strings were added and improvements made. In our state there are many renowned sitar players, but Savita Bakshi's name has become the household name. Savita presently working as additional secretary, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and languages in an exclusive interview with this correspondent share some of her experiences. Savita Bakshi born in one of the reputed family of city of temples has attained many achievements right from her early childhood as she was interested in social work and other related works in and around her neighbourhood. Savita is a soft spoken person with a multifaceted personality with pleasing nature. She has passed her BA Examination from Jammu university with Sitar as one of the subject in 1975 and obtained master degree in music from Punjab University with securing distinction in practical in 1977. Savita passed Pre-Ph. D Course in October-1998 from university of Jammu and registered from Ph.D Degree in 1999 for the topic "the musicological patters of Adi Granth" and an on the verge of submitting the thesis. She taught sitar as senior instructor upto 2003 and then promoted as principal, Institute of Music and Fine Arts, Jammu and now working as additional secretary, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages where she is looking after different kind of programmes related to Art, Culture and Languages to create awareness amongst general public in the state of J&K which enjoys cultural, religious and linguistic diversity. Savita, an approved radio and TV artist has performed on public stages in many times not only in state but across the country and abroad. She also have delivered guest lecturers in Jammu university and has remained as dean faculty of music and fine arts in Jammu university from 2003 to 2007. She was also awarded from 'Guru Samman' by Sanskar Bharti and in a felicitation function on 15th April 2010 , the first lady Usha Vohra confirm the title 'Sangeet Surbhi' on her. She was on two and half months tour in July, 1997, on invitation from the South Wales Ethinic Arts Team (SWEAT), to take part and perform in the Golden Jubilee celebration f Independence of the Indian sub continent. She performed two recitals for BBC Wales, one programme organised by the TUC in Swansea, two recitals in Cambridge and one sitar performance at the community education centre in Cardiff (United Kingdom). At the prestigious BBC's programme "A voice for All" salient features of sitar as musical instrumental and participated in "II International Festival" The instruments sounds of Eurasia "organized at Ulam-Ude, Russia in 2007. Savita while gives credit to her father Jagdish Dutt Bakshi for initiation in music and for professional career and she awards full marks to her husband Raji Ghai for extending all support. She said his backing enables me to carry on my professional assignments and also family duties. We have mutual understanding and co-operation, she added and said that her guru O N Raina and mother-in-law Phoola Ghai were instrumental in my upbringing and learning.
