5/28/2010 12:17:16 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 27: Much hyped programme of installation of Close Circuit Televisions (CCTV) cameras, is not serving the purpose, for which they have been installed in the state particularly in the winter capital of the state-Jammu. They have been installed in the city more than three years ago, but as per the sources, the CCTV cameras have been proved unsuccessful to put a check on the crime incidents and nab the culprits involved in many incidents. As per the information received from the various police stations of Jammu city, revealed that the rate of case solving in the city is not on the expected lines despite installation of CCTV cameras in the city.
Police sources maintained that there was lot of expectations and hopes in the department that the installation of the CCTV cameras would help in solving cases, but results were not up to the expectations.
And now, the police department is going to install 75-100 more cameras in city to control the criminal activities in the city.
However, explaining another angle to the story, a prominent trade union leader on the condition of anonymity stated that real purpose of the installation of CCTV cameras was to control the rallies and protests of the people to highlight their demands.
He also said that since the installation of CCTV cameras, the police brutalities on the different protesters have been increased.
He cited the example of police action on SRTC protesters, refugee protesters, striking employees besides others.
He further said that the police have got an important tool in its kitty to control the agitations. A senior police officer said that it is almost three years now that CCTV cameras have been installed in Jammu city and many cases were solved with the help of these cameras.
