| Govt to tighten noose around water thieves, encroachers: Taj | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 28: To tighten noose around water thieves and check encroachment along canals and other water sources, the government is taking series of measures to revamp and activate the law enforcement and prosecution mechanism available within the department, said Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr Taj Mohi-ud-Din here today. Speaking at an officers meeting, the Minister directed that the departmental officers having magisterial powers would streamline their set up for ensuring prosecution of persons booked under various offences. For the purpose, the minister ordered the PHE and Irrigation authorities to engage judicial clerks to assist the enforcement and prosecution wing to maintain the records of offences and convictions. Taj said that since the state is facing an emergency like situation in the backdrop of long dry spells and severe depletion of both ground and surface water, there is a need to check illegal and misuse of water. He said better management of water should be coupled with strict enforcement of laws to tide in the prevailing water crisis. The Minister asked the officers to bring in use their powers and ensure that the drinking and irrigation water was not misused. He said protection of channels, canals and drinking water lines was equally important to ensure minimum wastage of water. He also asked officers to take strict action against the persons indulging in encroachment and damage of canals, besides theft and illegal use of irrigation and drinking waters Senior officers from PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control departments were present in the meeting.
