RAJOURI, May 28: The Unprecedented rise in mercury level has left people simmering across Jammu region. As if the rising temperatures were not enough, unscheduled power cuts have added few more degrees to scorching and sweltering conditions people are made to live under, particularly in district Rajouri where the duration for cuts runs invariably around 14 hours a day.
Though having its own minister of state for power, Rajouri residents are feeling harassed from the department as they are facing unscheduled power cuts of about 14 hours. Even Hospital line has been snapped putting question mark on the survival of the patients. On account of what can be aptly described as grim situation, Bhartiya Janata Party and Peoples Democratic Party are planning to take to streets against virtual failure of PDD in this district.
Residents of Rajouri said that they are facing 14 hours power curtailment in the city for the last many days which has created a number of problems for the locals. Mohammad Razman a local resident of Rajouri said that they are groping in dark due to power cuts for the last few days. He added that the department is apathetic and indifferent towards the condition of the residents. "It is strange that we have our own minister of the department but instead of any relief, we are witnessing harassment from it", he added.
Patients admitted in Hospital are the worst sufferer due to this power cuts as all the machines have stopped functioning and even invertors have turned off due to unscheduled cuts. "There is no power for the last 6 hours", an attendant in Intensive Care Unit of District Hospital said. Hospital staff says that the transformer of the Hospital has been damaged and all the batteries of investors have turned off. "Yes there is no power for the last 5-6 hours and we are facing a lot of difficulty to diagnose patients being admitted in ICU", a doctor on the condition of anonymity said.
Student community is also suffering due to power cuts which has put question mark on their future. "Interruption in power supply cause great loss to our studies. We cannot do our home work which badly affects our routine studies", Mehnaz Akhter a student told Early Times. She questioned "Who will bear the loss of our studies".
Meanwhile there are atleast 300 businessmen who are totally dependent on power supply and they are annoyed with these unscheduled curtailments who have suffered a great loss for the last few days. "I am totally dependent on the business of cold drinks and I have suffered great loss with the power cuts. Nobody is ready to drink warm drinks", Pankaj Kumar a stall owner said.
When contacted, Executive Engineer Power Development Department Rajouri Choudhary Maqbool Hussain has expressed his helplessness saying he cannot do anything because the things are not under his control. "I can do nothing as the there are cuts from the Jammu", Executive Engineer said however added that there are only 10 hours cuts. "It is wrong to say that there are 14 hours cuts", he added.
On the other hand, Bhartiya Janta Party and Peoples Democratic Party are planning assemble on the streets and hold demonstration against the department if the power supply is not streamlined within 3 days. "We are planning to hold dharna in Gujjar Mandi chowk against PDD if the situation remains unchanged", Tazeem Dar, PDP leader said adding that residents are facing hardships and the department ministers are enjoying Air Conditioned facilities in their Jammu and Srinagar residences. BJP state secretary Vibodh Gupta has also toughened stand on the situation. "This is joke with the people. We have to come forward on streets against PDD as the department has completely failed to redress the problems of people", Gupta said alleging "The department is having incapable minister who is not interested in solving the problems but creating more and more problems". He threatened to launch indefinite protest if the department will not change its attitude. He has also demanded compensation to the loss to 300 businessmen whose business is dependent on the power supply.
