| IB finds security leaks at ports | | | Tuesday, October 17 KOLKATA: The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has cautioned Director General of Shipping that ports are breaching security norms by allowing the entry of outsiders.
The International Shipping & Port Security Code (ISPSC) code prohibits the entry and presence of outsiders. The code also does not permit existence of any civilian construction. However, the intelligence agency has noted that outsiders have free access to ports.
Highly placed IB sources told DNA that in most cases, permanent constructions had come up before the ISPSC norms were prescribed. However, after the norms were laid down, there has been no attempt to demolish such constructions.
The first in the list of erring authorities is the Kolkata Dock Complex (KDC) under the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT). There are two mosques in the berth area of KDC in violation of security norms.
When contacted, KoPT chairman AK Chanda told DNA that the mosques had been there before 1947. “We have worked out a formula with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) contingent posted there. Every time, outsiders come to offer prayers, they are first frisked. The CISF jawans also keep a constant vigil.” However, Chanda admitted that this cannot be a permanent solution.
