| PDD wires not changed for decades | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 29: Every thing in this world-living or non living, has a particular life span, it had to die or cease to exist one day. But the Power Development Department (PDD) it seems is working against this law of nature, and adamant to replace the decades old wiring system in many parts of the state. This is particular true in case of old Jammu city, Samba town, Udhampur, R S Pura town and Kathua. There were also reports of many incidents because of these old wiring, causing grave threat to life and property of the locals. These are happening despite the tall claim of the state government to provide better facilities of electricity to the people in every nook and corner of the state. In RS Pura area of district Jammu, the condition of electric wires is even worse. Residents of the area said that the old wiring was replaced in RS Pura market only, but all other localities and wards were remained untouched. They alleged that in market area the wires were changed after more than 30 years that too after repeated appeals and representations to the concerned authorities. Interestingly, he also said that in Chohala village adjoining RS Pura-one of the largest in the Tehsil, mostly inhabited by Scheduled Caste population is worst sufferer of the government apathy. The population has increased manifold over the past few years due to which consumption level of electricity has also gone up but the old wiring is insufficient and old to bear the load. It is pertinent to mention here that these wires are loose and repaired many times. A PDD official said that old wires had no impact on the power supply. The department replaces the old wires on demand from the people, and the rest would also be replaced in a phased manner on the availability of funds. He also said that load on the wires has been increased many fold with increase in population, and the wiring system is based on old estimates.
