| Absconding fake RTO arrested | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 29: A fake regional transport officer (RTO), who went underground after the May 11 police raid on a "sub-RTO" office at Talab Tillo here, was today arrested from his hideout. The sub-office search had led the raiding police party to the recovery of several bogus registration certificates (RCs), licences, stamps of RTO, one ARTO and other officials. Police sources said the fake RTO and kingpin Surjit Singh alias Tassa had managed to escape before the raid while his deputy Gurdeep Singh alias Rimple was arrested. Tassa, originally a resident of Ludhiana in Punjab, was putting up in a rented accomodation at Talab Tillo for the past two years. He was arrested by police from his hideout today, the sources added. Police had come to know about the fake RTO office at Talab Tillo on the disclosure of Anil Sharma, who was held in the first week of May from outside the RTO office at Nehru market with fake stamps, RCs and licences. Surjit, who posed himself as a RTO, had also managed to get a fake permanent resident certificate (PRC) from the Jammu tehsil office, the sources added. From the raided premises, police had recovered 23 fake stamps, including that of RTO and clerks, over 100 blank RCs, hundreds of fake permits and one stamp of ARTO, Sopore. The accused sold fake driving licenses, route permits and RCs to people at exhorbitant rates. As Surjit was said to have fled to Chamba in Himachal Pradesh, a police team was despatched, but he remained untraced. Sources said though Surjit had applied for anticipatory bail, the court rejected it. During interrogation, he was alleged to have disclosed to police the names of his four associates who lived in Talab Tillo area. Raids were being conducted to nab them too, the sources added.
