| DYSS distributes Rs 7.5 lakh scholarships among 485 players | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 1: To boost the talent and encourage the budding players, the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) distributed over Rs seven lakh fifty thousand scholarships among 485 student players in Jammu Province. These boys and girls, studying up to Higher Secondary level, have been given away Rs 1750 for participation and Rs 10,000 for winning a medal at the national (school) level competitions held under the banner of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) annually during the last session. Jammu district topped the list of those got the scholarships with 351 boys and girls, followed by district Poonch and Udhampur with 37 and 29 recipients respectively. However, three districts of Kishtwar (three), Rajouri and Doda (six each) could not touch the double figure mark. Not even a single student from district Ramban found place in the list. Out of 25 student players who got Rs 10,000 scholarships for securing one of the first three positions at the national level, Jammu district bagged 24 and Reasi one. Only 73 students from Govt schools Government-run schools, who deserve better deal among those received the scholarships, for being the only institutions contributing full 50 per cent games fund to the pool of Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), had only 73 entries. Rest of the 278 recipients of such scholarships either belong to private schools or those affiliated with the Central Board of School Education (CBSE). These schools include Army Schools and Kendriya Vidyalayas also, who hardly make sports fund contributions as per the laid down norms. However, in districts other than Jammu, maximum scholarships went to those studying in government-run schools. Major chunk for Pvt schools Though they hardly contribute 50 per cent sports funds, collected from the students, to the kitty of DYSS, still the private schools took away major chunk of Rs 10,000 scholarships. Among the 24 recipients in Jammu district, 20 such scholarships were awarded to students of private institutions while other four went to government run schools.
