6/1/2010 11:13:38 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Jun 1: The Government intends to enhance the honorarium of Numberdars and Chowkidars shortly to the proposal for which has been submitted to the Chief Minister.
This was announced by Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir and Minister for Revenue, Raman Bhalla jointly at a day-long convention of Numberdars and Chowkidars at Kunzar today.
Addressing the convention, Mir described Numberdars as the real representatives of people who played a relentless service especially during the last 20 years for upkeep and maintenance of revenue records. He said they were the only bridge between Government and the people during the period of turmoil.
The Minister said the Government intends to strengthen the institution of Numberdars and Chowkidars at gross roots level. He said the Government is sensitive to the problems faced by them and favoured their full involvement in the democratic and development process in the State.
Mir said Coalition Government is committed to get them their rightful place in the system as they are the basic components of revenue administration.
Addressing the convention, Minister for Revenue, Raman Bhalla said the Government would construct one room for Numberdars and Chowkidars at all the 257 Patwar Khanas in the State. This, he said, would ensure their full involvement in disposing of revenue matters within their jurisdiction.
Bhalla described Chowkidars and Numberdars as the pillers of democracy who worked despite threats and odds for the revival of democratic institutions in the State.
