| CBI to probe any criminality in the Barak deal | | |
New Delhi, OCT 17 The CBI probe into the acquisition of the Barak anti-missile system from Israel is to ascertain whether there was any criminality in the transaction, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here today. "The case is to find out whether procedures have been duly followed and whether there is any criminality in the transaction", the Minister said on the sidelines of the Naval Commanders Conference.
"Only on these two issues FIR has been filed", by the CBI, Mukherjee said pointing out that the case was not about the merits or demerits of weapon system or any other system as being made out by the media.
"The entire (media) focus is whether a particular system is good or bad -- it is not the issue. The issue is totally different", the Minister said.
His comments came a day after Navy Chief Admiral Arun Prakash came out in full support of the Barak missile system saying it was comparable to the best in the world.
CBI had last week registered FIRs against former defence minister George Fernandes and others alleging irregularities in the Rs 1,150 crore deal to purchase the Barak missile system. |
