| Transformer meant for 250 houses supplying power to over 1000 houses | | Erratic power supply | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June, 1: With alarming increase in population in the winter capital of the state i.e. Jammu, the Power Development Depar-tment (PDD) has failed to cope up requirements of the increased population and providing requisite power infrastructure in the city. This is particularly true in case of areas outskirts of Jammu city such as Muthi, Suryavanshi Nagar, and Dogra Nagar, where the Electric Transformer was installed more than twenty years ago, only for quarters of Jammu Development Authority (JDA) made for rehabilitating migrants families. Later, power was supplied through this transformer to the other areas also. Originally installed for almost 250 families, is now catering to the needs of more than one thousand families, resulting in frequent power failure. It is pertinent to mention here that this is not the only case of alleged carelessness of the power department, this is happening in every nook and corner of the state. Ravinder Kumar Bhat, a resident of Suryavanshi Nagar stated that this was happening despite the tall claims of the State Government to provide basic amenities like water, power and roads to the people of the state to provide them relief on demand. He said that he had also written a letter to the concerned authorities to provide separate transformer for his area to avoid frequent power cuts. Despite many complaints, the department has not taken any step to provide relief to the people, he complained. Pertinently, with the increase in temperature with each passing day, unscheduled and frequent power cuts affects the life of the people of the state. Local people, Ajay Kumar Munshi and Ajay Misri also expressed same views and said that though electronic meters have been installed in these localities, unscheduled power cuts still are there. Locals further maintained that if the PDD authorities do not concede their genuine demand, they would go for agitation. Chief Engineer PDD, Mohammad Qasim was not available his comments.
