| Inefficiency ruling roost under JU VC Varun Sahni | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 1: Things in Jammu University are deteriorating day by day. Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Varun Sahni, is "squarely responsible" for the prevailing situation on the campus. He has allowed himself to be surrounded by an "inefficient coterie" consisting of Registrar, his Special Secretary - "a plant of the former Vice-Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo" - and a couple of other persons, who are known for their "inefficiency, mismanagement and sycophancy." "It is they, and not Prof Varun Sahni, who are running the affairs of the university in a manner that suits them and their supporters." This is what the people in the University of Jammu are saying.
Insiders reveal that the Vice-Chancellor, "who has no administrative acumen, is behaving in a dictatorial manner and not allowing the efficient and able persons to play their role in the University". Sources also reveal that the "Vice-Chancellor has developed weakness for the Registrar to the extent that the latter is manipulating everything in his own favour and in favour of those who are very close to him". Sources close the corridors of power in the University have also revealed that the "Vice-Chancellor may empower the Registrar to handle the office of the Joint-Registrar Account because the Vice-Chancellor also wants to mint easy money".
One may not agree with all that the people on the campus are saying. In fact, it cannot be said about Prof Varun Sahni that he is corrupt. However, it is certain that all is not well with the University of Jammu. There are "corrupt and inefficient officials" who have been playing all kinds of "mischief." It is also difficult to believe that Prof Varun Sahni would ask the Registrar, whose credentials are not aboveboard and who was removed from the office of Joint-Registrar by Prof Amitabh Mattoo on the ground that "his activities had created widespread discontent on the campus."
But if what the insiders have told on the condition of anonymity is correct, then it can be said that the intentions of the Vice-Chancellor are questionable. Insiders are of the view that "a person who has failed to discharge his duties as Registrar, who is not easily accessible and who has created a mess in the administrative wing should not be given an additional charge."
"The accounts section needs an efficient and honest Joint-Registrar, who is always available in his chair and not seen sitting in the front row during all the non-academic and other functions organized by AB and C as is the case with the present Registrar, who attends all the functions at the cost of the University that has been causing inordinate delays in the matters pending with him", the insiders point out.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni has to clear all kinds of doubts and put right persons at right places. He needs to constitute a group of efficient teachers and administrators so that he could discuss with it things on a day-to-day basis and set things right. He must be knowing it that the administrative wing, examination section, directorate of correspondence educations and a number of teaching departments are in a shambles. It is his duty to revamp these offices and departments. The people of Jammu region want him to give a right lead to the University because this is the highest institution of leaning in the region. He must act against inefficiency and put honest, efficient and right persons at right places at the earliest so that the University is saved from any kind of criticism. .
