| Stiff-necked approach of the Congress may allow PDP to draw political mileage. | | |
Srinagar,October 17 :- Unwittingly the state unit of the Congress is allowing its coalition partner,the PDP,to draw political mileage from the former’s stiff-necked approach towards the latter.
The ministers,belonging to the Congress,forced a situation,during the Monday’s cabinet meeting, in which the Government had to defer its announcement regarding the release of another instalment of DA to the employees for which the Finance Minister,Mr Tariq Hamid Qarra, had made a commitment a few days ago.
The Congress ministers objected to Mr Qarra’s statement regarding the release of another instalment of DA on the plea that only the cabinet was entitled and empowered to take a decision on it.Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad,could not but support his party ministers even when knowing that Qarra’s announcement had sent waves of joy among the employees and their family members.An impression had gone round that it was the PDP that had piloted the move for granting another instalment of DA.And the Congress wanted to take the credit for it by first blocking the passage of the DA raise issue in the cabinet and then get it passed during another cabinet meeting.
But in both cases the PDP is a winner.People,especially employees,have begun cursing the ruling congress for scuttling the matter and keep on praising the PDP for its stand on the issue.Even if the DA issue was settled during the next cabinet meeting the credit would be given by employees to the PDP and not to the Congress.
That the Chief Minister and his ministerial colleagues in the Congress being unhappy over what they call “unhelpful attitude of the PDP” has been confirmed by none other than Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad in an interview to a national news agency.This,once again,lends evidence to the desire of the Chief Minister and a section in the State Congress to forge an alliance with the National Conference.
These congress leaders,including Mr Azad,are aware of the mind of the Congress high command which is averse to changing the current political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir.The AICC leadership is not in favour of forging an alliance with the National Conference for the time being.Informed sources said that possibly Mr Azad wanted to convey a message to the Congress high command regarding the “unhelpful” role of the PDP which may motivate Ms Sonia Gandhi to snap ties with the PDP.
However,during the last one year Mufti Mohd.Sayeed and his daughter,Ms Mehbooba,PDP Chief,have cemented their relations with senior Congress leaders,particularly Ms Sonia Gandhi.The result of the cordial equation between the father-daughter duo and Ms Gandhi and Dr Manmohan Singh has been that Delhi continues to repose trust in the Mufti’s ability and skill for his role in back channel diplomacy with regard to normalization of relations between Delhi and Islamabad.And no wonder that Mufti Sayeed has been picked for leading an unofficial Indian delegation to New York where the UN General Assembly session is to be on when the Mufti leaves for the United states on October 29.
Political observers in the state are of the view that if the Congress agreed on changing the present political arrangement it is likely to enable the PDP to gain added political weight.
