BJP leadership is in a fix
Rajasthan CM triggers new controversy
10/17/2006 5:43:06 PM
SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
NEW DELHI, OCT. 17: Chief Minister of the BJP-ruled Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje, has walked her way into a new controversy once again. She walked down the ramp at a fashion show in Bangalore, which has got the Congress up in arms.
Vasundhara Raje, after sensing dissatisfaction of her politcal adversaries, commented: "I am not fashion conscious as such. But I believe that it is going to give people that opportunity and therefore fashion for development is to be cheered". Raje might have had her reasons to sashay down the ramp at an event showcasing men's fashion in Bangalore but she had no idea what a storm she was going to kick up back home.

An ambassador of Rajasthan at the hip do, Vasundhara Raje said that she was there to encourage her weavers.
"I am here to project my weavers because I believe that this is a bridge between poverty and opportunity. We are here to bridge that gap. Today, when you look at my weavers and you see the smile on their faces you know the change that it has made for them," Raje said.

But Raje's ramp act has galvanised the Congress in Rajasthan. The party held protests at Jaipur's Statue Circle and enacted Raje's Bangalore ramp walk as well. The State Congress leaders said the Chief Minister has been elected to address the concerns of the State and not walk the ramps.

In New Delhi, the Congress party has sought to politicise the issue in an apparent bid to embarrass the BJP's central leadership. No wonder, the Congress party's comment against Vasundhara Raje: "She is walking down the ramp like a model! Rajasthan's farmers have come down to the roads demanding water, there is severe shortage of electricity, seasonal diseases have gripped the State and she is not even worried".

Raje has been in news in the last two months for ordering expensive cars and adding a chopper to her already elaborate fleet. Now, her walk on the ramp has added more fuel to the fire.
