| PK seeks special methodology to enumerate KP population | | Census-2011 | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 3: Panun Kashmir, a frontline organisation of Kashmiri Pandits in exile, today submitted memorandum to Census Commissioner of India through Deputy Director Census Operations, Jammu requesting him to devise a special methodology to enumerate Kashmiri Pandit population. The members of the organization held a meeting today and considered in detail the importance of Census Operation-2011 in general and particularly its relevance to the displaced KP community in the context of the press statements that had appeared in a section of the press recently. The meeting after due deliberations passed a resolution unanimously stressing the dire necessity of an earnest enumeration process in respect of Kashmiri Pandits living at different places in the country. In the resolution adopted by the organization, it was stated that the issue of the phenomenal decrease of Pandit population of Kashmir valley has been always kept under the carpet by the powers that be. "The government has remained indifferent to and silent about the causes of the decline of the Pandit population in the Valley, notwithstanding the fact that Kashmiri Pandits suffered forced outflow of population continuously due to the government policies responsible for their economic, religious, educational and cultural squeeze," it maintained. The meeting observed, "It is feared that the outcome of the enumeration exercise of Census-2011 would again be underplayed in respect of the exiled Kashmiri Pandits." It further observed, "At present Kashmiri Pandit Community is scattered within and outside India. The Census Operations 2011 do not provide any mechanism for correctly determining the link of the scattered Pandit floating population with Kashmir. The format, procedure and operational limitation of the Indian Census 2011 are bound to fail in reflecting the total population of Kashmiri Pandit community." The organization said that the purpose of Census Operations has not to be restricted to the head-count of human beings only but it has to be comprehensive enough to reflect the changes that have taken place in the demographic complexion in a politically sensitive region like Kashmir, especially in respect of the ethnic minorities. Prominent among those who took part in the meeting included Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo, president, Prof M L Raina, chairman, Political Affairs Committee and Virender Raina, national spokesperson.
