| Nullah-clearing work begins ahead of rains | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 3: To avoid the choking of city nullahs and the overflowing of filthy water into houses during the forthcoming rainy days, their cleaning tops the priority list of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC). “The JMC has put its men and machinery on work so that all city nullahs and deep drains are cleared of filth before the onset of monsoons,” a JMC officer said. Once cleaned, the nullahs and deep drains would not overflow into the nearby houses, he added. Apart from the nullahs that mainly passed through the localities, there were 104 deep drains which were being cleaned daily as per a special drive of the JMC’s sanitation wing, the officer said. The special drive was launched to ensure that the rain water flowed smoothly in them and it did not overflow, causing damage to properties of the people, he added. He said the desilting of the main Shakti Nagar nullah had already begun and a total of about 600 cubic metres of silt, boulders and garbage had been taken out and transported to the dumping site. The JMC has also started a campaign to check eatables in shops and find out if these were adulterated. In this regard, JMC health officer, Dr Mohammad Anwar Choudhary, accompanied by food Inspectors, inspected various food establishments to check food adulteration in commonly used food items including meat, chicken, ice cream, fruit juice, sweets and cooked food at Panama Chowk, Narwal Mandi, Transport Nagar and Malik Market. During the inspection, 55 food establishments were checked and 14 defaulters booked under J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000 and PFA Act, 1954. The team also booked three persons found smoking at the public places under Cigarettes and Tobacco Act, 2003. A fine of Rs 3,400 was realized on spot from the defaulters.
