Dwivedi reviews progress of MGNREGA

JAMMU, June 3: District Development Commissioner, Jammu, M K Dwivedi today convened a meeting of officers of Rural Development, Horticulture and Agriculture Departments to review the progress of MGNREGA.
The DDC impressed that keeping in view the shortage of water particularly in kandi area, stress be laid for conservation of traditional sources and encouraging plantation of some cash crop which requires less water .
The ACD reported that a total of 3114 works involving Rs.2764.48 lakh as labour component have been proposed during the year 2010-11 which includes 614 works of water conservation and renovation of traditional water bodies. The DDC directed the BDOs to immediately take up the identified water conservation works like ponds, wells and bowlies and complete maximum works before the onset of monsoons so that water is stored in the water bodies on the onset of rainy season.
The BDOs assured that 225 water conservation works in 8 blocks shall be completed by the end of June 2010 and it was desired that DDC himself will inspect a few of these works in the month of July 2010. The DDC also made it clear that MGNERGA is a demand driven scheme and works be taken up for execution through local labour after getting demand from the public. The Chief Horticulture Officer was directed to fix a target of plantation of 20,000 Aloe-Vera plants for which labour component for digging of pits will be provided by the Rural Development Department under MGNERGA and seedling be provided by horticulture department.
The team also destroyed 10 kg of unhygienic ice cream, 15 kg of stale cooked food and 5 kg cut fruits being sold in open.
Apart from this, about 5 kg polythene carry bags were also seized during the drive. Another team of the enforcement field staff, led by chief enforcement officer, along with police inspected shops and other outlets in Rehari, Exchange Road, Rani Park and Parade areas, and seized about 15 kilograms of polythene carry bags.
An amount of Rs 5,100 was charged as fine from 27 defaulters who were using polythene carry bags.
Some building permission cases were also cleared by JMC today in a meeting of building operation controlling authority held under the chairmanship of JMC commissioner.
In the meeting, 86 building permission cases were examined and cleared out of 98. The cleared cases would generate a revenue of Rs 17 lakh.
The meeting was also attended by joint commissioner (adm), joint commissioner (works) and senior town planner.
