Despite progress terrorism and inflation main challenges for UPA Govt.
6/3/2010 11:54:45 PM
Well common people do not seem to be bothered about the progress in science and technology that UPA Government has been able to register during the last six years. What haunts people is the pinch of inflation that too in various essential commodities.Hence the progress card prepared by the Government led by Manmohan Singh may not excite people. The UPA Government claims that the Indian economy registered a growth of 7.4 per cent during 2009-2010.What does it mean for the common people whose domestic budget stands totally upset with severe rise in the prices of foodgrains, milk, milk products, vegetables, fruit, mutton, chicken, edible oils and medicines besides host of other items of daily use. During its second innings the Congress led Government in the centre has been assuring that it will curb price rise but during the last one year there has been no success in the Government's efforts for bringing down prices. It is during the Manmohan Singh's rule that
India made strides in missile technology and in other sectors of industry but on the other hand there are a large number of villages, including the tribal belts, where people, especially children, consume mud for their survival.Malnutrition in India is as serious a challenge as the one from militants in the north and from the Naxals in the central and eastern sectors. In the progress report the Prime Minister has called for calibrated reduction of fiscal deficit which has touched 3.45 lakh crores. He has indicated that the Government planned tightening of expenditure. But no such hint has been dropped while referring to the two major challenges of insurgency and inflation. He has identified inflation and terrorism as two major challenges for the Government.Despite being a sincere politician one is still doubtful whether Manmohan Singh will be able to galvanise the central and the state machinery for tackling Maoists and militants in various states, including
Jammu and Kashmir where the Pakistan sponsored terrorism has caused death and destruction during the last 20 years. No doubt the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir has started showing signs of improvement but because of confusion and lack of decision on the part of the centre the activities of the Naxals and the Maoists in various states, including Jharkhand,Chhattisgarh,Orrisa,West Bengal and Bihar, have posed a serious security threat to the nation. The progress card lists several achievements which includes revolutionary measres in the sectors of education, economy, security. The UPA Government can rightly claim credit for introducing the Right to Education Act,midday meals system for the poor students.Despite decline of 0.2 per cent in agricultural output the nation has achieved a growth rate of 7.2 per cent. The report indicates that Delhi will continue its effors for forcing Islamabad to take measures so that the soil of Pakistan was not used for
exporting terrorism to India and at the same time favour resumption of bilateral talks.Yes the UPA Government has plans of setting up national counter terrorism centre and national intelligence grid for tackling the menace of terroism effectively. The need of the hour was to establish these two centres so that effective counter terrorism measures for enforced in states infested by militants and by Maoists. You cannot expect a Government to succeed in its counter terrorism plan if it continues to dither over the issue of pressing into service the Army and the Air Force in states plagued by Maoists and Naxals.Maoists are on war with India and it is for Delhi to initiate tough measures alongwith steps aimed at improving the economy of the people in these states.(eom)
