| GMS Gujjar Nagar victim of govt apathy | | '2 rooms for 120 students' | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 5: Notwit-hstanding tall claims of state government to provide all basic facilities needed for providing education in the state, there are sufficient examples to prove that the government is failed in its objectives. The Government Middle School, Gujjar Nagar housed in just two rooms that too, in a rented accommodation in district Jammu near District Development Commi-ssioner office and in the proximity of the official residences of Chief Minister and Chief Secretary, is one such example which has strength of about 120. Locals maintained that the school was established many years ago after repeated demand of the residents of the area. "No progress has been made in providing basic amenities even after repeated representations to the various government officials and education department," they complained. About the infrastructure, they said that the school has only two rooms including headmaster's office and store room. Locals maintained students of the many classes were forced to sit in 2 rooms because of shortage of class rooms. There were also no proper infrastructural facilities in the school. Interestingly, this school building was on rent and there was no toilet and sports facility being provided in the school. "We are facing problems due to lack of rooms and other basic facilities pertaining to education which shows that all the claims of state government were proving futile," cited a student of 7th class, Mohammad Yaqoob. One prominent citizen of that area informed that the children of officers in different government departments and of politicians of all hues are study in high profile private schools; this is main reason for the sorry state of affairs in majority of the government schools. Chief Education Officer (CEO), Jammu Natha Ram Digra said "We are aware of the problems of the students because of non-availability of suitable building. We were forced to opt for a rented accommodation, as proper land was not available in the said locality. The education department is doing its best to provide alternate accommodation to the students after summer vacations." He also said that there were many other schools, which are being operated in rented accommodation in the length and breadth of the state.
