Environment day celebrations: A mere publicity stunt
6/5/2010 10:54:02 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 5: Much ado about thing! The maxim suitably reflects the Government's efforts to save the environment. Though 'World Environment Day" was celebrated today in various parts of country with much pomp and show, yet it failed to deliver the results for which it was started 1972.
Every year June 5 is being observed as "World Environment Day" to spread the message to save the environment from further degradation. Again a day came and passed away without leaving any impact of its significance.
This is well known saying "saving environment means stepping forward to save life on earth" but in contrast to it the state government deforested all the trees along the National Highway 1-A from Lakhanpur to Srinagar.
The Government promised to replant these trees to compensate the loss but till date no tree has been planted anywhere.
Besides this, the unplanned development activities like construction of the government buildings such as the construction of central university, expansion of the airport area leads to the cutting of many trees of the utilized area which also cause environmental pollution
In Jammu, the Minister for Industries and Commerce Surjit Singh Slathia flagged off a rally of students for creating awareness among youth and general public to protect the environment.
A shopkeeper of the area Sohan Lal ridiculed that he had been witnessing many such rallies since long, but the things remained unchanged.
He further said that trees were being destroyed by the brick kiln owners and charcoal kilns owners with the active connivance of government officials.
The day was celebrated and observed by only some people in the urban areas for cheap publicity, in rural area many people replied in negative when asked about importance and origin of this day.
