| Police athlete Ram Raj wins Jammu Marathon | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 5:Ram Raj, a Special Police Officer (SPO) with J&K Police today won the ‘Environment Day Marathon’ which was organised by the Board of Development for Sports in India (BDSI) here this morning.Second place went to Rajesh Kumar while Rohit Sharma, an NCC Senior Under Officer finished third. Among girls, Nitish Bakshi, who covered full stretch, bagged first position. A large number of athletes, including the school children, participated in this marathon organised with an aim to spread message about environment preservation. Earlier, the athletes were flagged off by Minister for Industries, Surjit Singh Slathia from Satwari Chowk for their destination, Hari Niwas Palace, where the winners were awarded. At the concluding point, guest of honour, former Mayor Jammu Municipal Corporation, Kavinder Gupta felicitated the winners and expressed his views while speaking to the gathering. Plants were also distributed among the participants by the Social Forestry wing of the J&K Forest Department. The organizers of the marathon were also supported by the social and voluntary organisations of the state in their endeavor to protect the environment. Meanwhile, talking to Sports & Allied News, Director BDSI, Amit Sethi said, “Marathon was organised to create awareness among the Jammuities towards growing environment degradation and need for its conservation by way of planting more trees and keeping the surroundings clean.”
