| ‘Jammuites die like insects, get peanuts as compensation’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 5: Sounds cheap but it happens here in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Living life is miserable due to turmoil created by imbalance of socio-economic, political, regional and religious aspects. Above all corruption and dishonesty plays vital role in sorting issues. Only influential, politicians and bureaucrats seemingly enjoy life and all others are subjected to uncertainty, miseries and apathy. In the prevailing ironic situation, death at least gets compensation of Rs one lakh and 2 SPO jobs. A few days ago, one Paramjit Singh son of Thakur Singh of Bakshi Nagar was taken into police custody for questioning where he lost his life in suspicious circumstances. The bereaved family was awarded Rs one lakh ex-gratia and 2 jobs of SPOs, one to his son Sandeep Singh and other to his wife Charanjeet Kour. "The deceased's son and daughter are students of 12th and 10th, standard respectively. How is possible to make two ends meet with a temporary assured salary of Rs 3000 per month?", Zorawar Singh brother of deceased vowed. He said the government should at least give a permanent government employment to one of the members of the ill-fated family to keep them going. Another relative questioned the deceased's arrest. The manner in which his body was taken to the hospital to cover up a shameful act is highly deplorable", he said. Whatever the reasons for the deceased's arrest, the modus operandi and conduct of the police have eroded the credibility of the government. This is not the first time when such a brutal incident has occurred in Jammu. Similar gory incidents have been reported in the past as well and the widows and orphans created by the police by such acts have been neglected. The government perhaps does not know that death of a bread earner cannot be compensated by ex-gratia and temporary jobs. Maharaja Hari Singh, the aggrieved families believe, would be repenting for his decision of joining the Indian union in 1947 as people from his abode are dying like insects and get peanuts as compensation. On the other hand, Kashmiris get a fair deal even after death. They become martyrs and the government compensates them handsomely. This seems a distant dream in Jammu.
