Govt under attack from leaders of coalition allies
Gujjar ministers castigated for 'apathetic attitude'
6/5/2010 11:24:30 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, June 5: In what can be seen as growing discontent within the members of ruling coalition allies over the working the government in the state, three senior Gujjar leaders came out openly against their community ministers for their 'callousness' towards own community. Unhappy over political ramifications of Inter District recruitment bill which was passed recently in the state, the leaders belonging to both NC as well Congress even dared government to scrap it or else they would move the Supreme Court.
Virtually waging a war against its community ministers' nonchalance towards the damage wreaked on the tribal nomads, the ruling National Conference's Member Legislative Council (MLC) Javed Ahmed Rana has warned to initiate door-to-door campaign against such ministers among the Gujjar community.
"We would impress upon our people not to fall prey to these ministers' vote banking policy as they have left their own people and their livestock to get killed in the snow storms," said Javed Rana lamented while addressing a press conference here today.
However siding with the coalition for having taken some steps to redeem the devastation wreaked on the Gujjars and Bakerwals, Rana minced no words but in the same breath castigated the Gujjar ministers who he alleged are enjoying the powers in the state and insulated to their community peoples' sufferings on all accounts.
"What to talk of other coalition minister, our tribal ministers did not even care to visit the snow affected areas and take the stock of situation whereas our community members have suffered huge loss to their lives, livestock and the property," said Javed Rana, adding these ministers have lost the confidence of the community members and they have no right to stay in the cabinet.
Meanwhile, demanding for the immediate relief and compensation for the affected people, Javed Rana said, "We appeal the Union as well as the state governments to constitute a commission to assess the loss suffered by the community members besides finding a solution for permanent settlement of these tribal nomads.
Abdul Gani Kohli, a senior Congress leader also castigated the government for its indifferent attitude saying, "We had earlier apprised the government about the predictable situation arising out of the inclement weather and have asserted for a safe arrangement but government failed to heed to our request."
Kohli said that despite more than a week's time having lapsed in the catastrophe, not a single administrative move have been made to help the surviving or assess the actual damage on the ground.
Bashir Ahmed Khattana, one more senior Gujjar leader was also present on the occasion who appreciated the move initiated by Javed Rana and pledged all communities to support him in his decision making policies for the community.
