JAMMU, June 5: Former MLA and senior BJP leader, Choudhary Pyara Singh today expressed his strong resentment against the decision of government to impose security charges on annual holy Amarnath yatra langers of Rs 25000.
In a press statement issued here, Pyara Singh criticised the State Government for charging security fee of Rs 25, 000 from outside parties for providing free Langer to the pilgrims during the ensuing Amarnath Yatra.
'The decision would discourage the parties for providing free langer during the Yatra days as they are not establishing langers here for a personal business or benefit', he said, adding, "They are providing social service to all irrespective of caste, creed and religion".
Singh said, 'Imposition of security fee is totally discriminatory and would hurt the the religious sentiments of the Hindus."
He also opposed the imposition of charge on each truck entering Lakhanpur carrying the Yatra related material or groups of pilgrims.
"Instead of providing proper facilities for the smooth and comfortable yatra for pilgrims, the state government has imposed tax on Shri Amarnath Yatra" he alleged.
Singh said that the imposing tax on free langar organizers was "irreligious" and against the principles of justice as the free Langar committees collect donation from individuals to provide free food, water and other necessary items to the needy pilgrims en route to Amarnath shrine.
He reminded that in 1998 when he was the Member of Legislative Assembly, he had taken up the matter with the then Chief Minister and got the toll tax exempt from the Amarnath parties who carried their goods for langers during annual Amarnath pilgrimage.
