| PDP Delegation Demands AFSPA Revocation | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, June 7: A PDP delegation today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and apprised him about "continuing violation" of human rights in the state. It demanded immediate revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and drew his attention towards what it said "deteriorating situation in the state which is witnessing increased public anger". A PDP delegation, led by its president Mehbooba Mufti, called on the Prime Minister here during which the opposition party pointed out continued "lack of accountability" on part of security forces, a party press release said. This coupled with misgovernance had almost nullified the gains of post 2002 peace initiative in the state when the PDP along with the Congress was at the helm of affairs, it said. The delegation gave a detailed account of "continuing violation of human rights in the state" and told the Prime Minister that individual probes were insufficient to restore the credibility of the system. It also stressed scrapping of rewards for encounters as an unavoidable confidence-building measure. The PDP demanded unconditional release of all political detenues and youths saying this was important for creating an atmosphere for dialogue. It expressed satisfaction over the revival of stalled peace process with Pakistan, but expressed concern over lack of progress on the internal front. Inviting Prime Minister's attention to the development of core economic sectors in the state, the delegation apprised him of the grave unemployment problem facing the youth.
