| As Pul-Doda submerges in dam lake, people demand rehabilitation | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 7: With the commissioning of Baglihar dam in 2008 and the subsequent rise of water level in river Chenab, Pul-Doda area was submerged in water, giving affected people a nightmarish experience. The people, who were forced to leave houses and business concerns, alleged that the government had not properly rehabilitated them as yet. "Authorities have provided partial compensation to the affected families, but how can it help those who have lost source of income?" said Rehabilitation Forum president Mohammad Amin. After the commissioning of Baglihar Power Project in 2008, there was sudden rise in water level of Chenab in the area which forced the Pul-Doda residents to shift to safer places. Of total 376 families, about 300 families had shifted to Jammu, Bhaderwah and Doda towns. Amin alleged the government had not provided complete compensation announced for the affected people. "The then PDP-led coalition government had assured rehabilitation of the affected families on 134 kanals of land, besides allotting them 250 shops, but so far nothing has been done," he added. The government had announced Rs 5.85 cr as compensation, but not even a single penny had been paid to the affected families so far, Amin alleged. Some poor families, finding it difficult to migrate, were still living there under fear psychosis of rising water level, he said. Amin alleged that the houses and shops of the people were demolished by government before they could be rehabilitated. "A submerging mosque and sunken shops and a gurdwara indicate that water level is still rising in the area," he added. The affected people appealed to the government to take immediate steps for their proper rehabilitation.
