Refugees stage protest, court arrest in Jammu

JAMMU, June 7: Hundreds of PoK refugees held massive demonstrations and courted arrest at several places to draw the attention of the visiting Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh towards their plight.
In Jammu, the refugees including a large number of women and elderly persons assembled under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir PoK Refugee Front -1947, 1965, 1971 at Bakshi Nagar near Medical College and staged demonstration. They were carrying banners and placards in hands and shouting slogans against Government of India and state government. They demanded their comprehensive settlement at the earliest. Rashpal Singh Chib, general secretary of the Front was leading here and also addressed the gathering.
Later, they moved to GMC police post and courted arrest. They were however, released after brief detention at the post.
Similarly, another protest demonstration was held at Gangyal where refugees raised slogans in support of their demands. They were also raising slogans against the Prime Minister for ignoring the demands of PoK refugees and causing discrimination against them. They alleged that Kashmiri migrants are being given undue attention while those suffering for the last over sixty years are being totally ignored. Thereafter they moved to the police station and offered court arrest.
Report from Nowshera said that nearly 300 people including men and women staged protest outside the office of Tehsildar after taking our rally from Patel Chowk and main market and shouted sloagans in support of their pending demands. Later, they submitted a memorandum for the government to the Tehsildar Nowshera. They moved to police station and offered arrest, however, they were not taken into custody by cops. After protesting for about an hour outside Thana then they moved to the main bazaar and dispersed near Patel Chowk from where they had started.
