| Violating govt order, some pvt schools open in vacations | | | Sandeep Bhat Early Times report JAMMU, June 7: Despite the government order for summer vacations from June 1 due to severe heat wave conditions, some private schools were still open in the city's peripheral areas and parts of other districts in the region. As mercury rose and heat waves swept across the plains in Jammu region, director school education, Zahida Khan had ordered the closure of all government and private schools from June 1 for summer vacations. However, in violation of the government order, some private schools in rural areas of Jammu and other districts in the region were still open. Students were forced to attend classes in these schools in the sweltering heat. In some of these schools, 8th and 12th class students were attending classes without uniform, official sources said. Rakesh Kumar (name charged) -- a student -- said they were compelled to attend the classes by their school teachers. "If we offer resistance, we are threatened of dire consequences," he added. A private school principal said they were running classes of senior students during summer vacations too because they wanted to complete their syllabuses on time. If their syllabuses were left incomplete, they won't be able to do well in examinations, he added. "Though this defies the government order, we are compelled to do so to complete syllabuses," he asserted. Many private schools were running classes in Bishanh, R S Pura, Arnia, Miran Sahib, Kathua, Udhampur and Rajouri areas. When contacted, Zahida Khan said her office had reports that some private schools were still not closed for summer vacations. "We have constituted an administrative team to look into the matter," she added. The director, however, refused to give the names of schools which had violated her order.
