| Traffic Police for making stringent laws | | Brewing resentment in public against increasing road mishaps | | AARTI BHAT EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 7: Though there is a brewing public resentment against the increasing traffic accidents in Jammu region, the authorities at the helm of affairs have failed to take the cognizance of the same. The road mishaps in last three months have taken a toll of over one hundred lives in different parts of Jammu region and the main reason in every traffic mishap has been the negligent driving and violation of traffic rules by the drivers under the noose of the traffic police. During the past two-three months two major road mishaps took place in erstwhile Dodo district killing scores of people. This was followed by another fatal accident in Mahore area of Reasi district last month in which 22 people lost their lives after a jam packed passenger vehicle turned turtle. On May 27 another road mishap took place at Battery Chesham in Ramose area of Jammu Srinagar National High Way in which eight people were killed and one was critically injured after a Tate Sumo they were driving fell into a deep gorge resulting into growing public resentment against the Traffic Department. However the June 5 road mishap on B C near Women College Gandhi Nagar in which two college girls of BA Final were crushed to death by a speedy minibus and killing of a middle aged man near Toph bridge on Akhnoor road when a speedy mini bus collided with the car he was driving has generated a lot of anger among the people. On the same day three army personnel were also killed just 20 meters away from the minibus- maruti car collision after their vehicle fell down into the tributary of Ranbir canal taking the toll to 6 people who were killed in different road mishaps on a single day in Jammu city. Various organizations have openly come against the Traffic Police for its failure in regulating the traffic in Jammu and they blame the Government and the authorities in the Traffic Police for allowing the drivers to violate the traffic rules. The Traffic Police is not loyal to it's job, said Sunita a student from Degree College Gandhi Nagar. The drivers violate the traffic rules under the noose of traffic police and they never bother to take action against them, she added. Justifying her point her colleague Rashmi said that had the Traffic Police been loyal to its duty then two tragic road mishaps would not have taken place on a single day at National Highway and Akhnoor road when traffic police was manning the road just few meters away from the mishap sites. It is ironical that at Akhnoor road the Traffic Police is manning the near the Police Naka and the road mishap took place just 20metres away from them but they could not take the cognizance of the same, said Ram Lal a local resident. It was only after the passers by forcibly broke the door of the car the police came on accident site. Had the police as well the traffic police manning the road near BSF Camp been a bit vigilant such fatal accidents would have been averted, he added. However the insiders in Traffic Department stress on making the stringent laws to check the traffic accidents and take punitive action against the violators. A top ranking officer of the Department while candidly admitting that the Traffic accidents are on increase said it is a problem throughout and Jammu is not any exception. There is need for making stringent laws at national level to take punitive action against the violators if the Government wants to keep the Traffic accidents at bay. Merely passing bucks against Traffic Police is not enough, he added. He said the Department is presenting 500 to 700 chalans daily and a Traffic Cop manning any road can't go beyond the rules in taking action against the traffic rules . Unless and until the rules are not made stringent and MVA is not amended to incorporate in it such clauses which can warrant quick action against the violators the situation will not improve. Moreover the Traffic Police is also facing a manpower shortage and the Government should pay attention to it to make it an effective force.
