| DIG does damage control exercise, says Shaleen murdered after 15 minutes of abduction | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 12: In a move, apparently aimed at improving police image which showed signs of deterioration after Shaleen Gupta's cold-blooded murder, Jammu-range DIG Farooq Khan today said the boy had been killed 15 minutes after his abduction. It may be mentioned that Shaleen's alleged abductors and murderers -- Darvinder Singh, son of Tirath Singh of Nai Basti, and Gagandeep Singh, son of Paramjeet Singh of Gole Gujral -- were rounded up two hours, or so after the kidnapping and then surprisingly freed. In a hurriedly called press conference, the DIG did the "much-needed" damage control exercise when he said the boy was killed by the accused 15 minutes after his kidnapping. "We could not save the boy because he was murdered 15 minutes after he was kidnapped. Soon after we received information, we picked up two persons on suspicion and after interrogation they broke down that they had kidnapped and murdered the boy in cold-blood," the DIG claimed. Khan's statement came at a time when the post-mortem report, which could throw light on the time of the murder, was still awaited. The time of murder could be known only after the post-mortem report was made available, said a senior police officer. The DIG claimed that despite non-cooperation by Shaleen's family, police got information of kidnapping from their own sources. All police nakas were alerted after that, he said. The police picked up Darvinder on suspicion around mid-night and released him after questioning. Gagandeep was also picked up on suspicion later and during his interrogation, he broke down that Darvinder was also involved in kidnapping and murder of the boy. He also confessed to have thrown the body at Belicharana. "Shaileen's throat was slit with a sharp-edged weapon by the accused," the DIG informed. "It is tragic incident and we are looking at all the aspects of the case. We are also investigating if they had acted on their own or some big gang is behind them," said Khan. He said the ransom call was made by Gagandeep from a PCO at Bus Stand. When Gagandeep was produced before the PCO owner, he had identified him, the DIG added.
