| Efforts afoot to promote horticulture in Jammu division: Sham | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 13: Minister for Horticulture and Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma today inaugurated one-day Mega Awareness-cum-Farmers Meet organized by the Horticulture Department at Akhnoor, . M. P. Madan Lal Sharma, Director Horticulture, Jammu, J. L. Sharma, Director, Floriculture, Jammu, K. K. Sharma and horticulture expert from Rajasthan University, Prof. M. L. Jakhar were also present on the occasion. The main objective of organizing the workshop was to educate the farmers about cultivating different varieties of fruits and medicinal plants suiting the climatic conditions of dry areas. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the Government has formulated a comprehensive plan to bring more areas of Jammu division under horticulture cultivation. He said that Jammu division has great potential of herbal cultivation, especially the Aleovera, which has great market demand. The Minister stressed upon the farmers to switch over to new trends and adopt multi-crop techniques to improve their socio-economic conditions. He said that the Government will provide them marketing and other logistic support. He said that the Government is establishing fruit and vegetable markets in every district and tehsil levels to facilitate the farmers. These Mandis will be equipped with the cold storage, processing units and transport facilities. He asked them to take full benefits of the centrally sponsored schemes and incentives. The Minister stressed upon the department of Horticulture to organize more such awareness programmes in the rural areas so that more and more farmers take interest in horticulture cultivation. Madan Lal Sharma appreciated the efforts of the department for creating awareness among the farmers about the latest trends of horticulture cultivation which can fetch good returns for their products. He stressed for commercialization of floriculture and asserted that the cultivation has great potential. He suggested for cultivation of marigold flower which has demand in all season. Director, Horticulture in his address highlighted the achievements and schemes undertaken by the Department. He said that Department is always at the back and call of the farmers and ready to provide them all kind of assistance and technical know-how about the latest technology to be adopted for different cash crops. He asked the farmers to take benefits of the schemes and incentives available with the department. More than 500 farmers from various parts of Jammu division participated in the workshop.
