| 3-day Singhey Khabab Sindhu festival inaugurated | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT LEH, June 13: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that his Government is keen on improving connectivity to Ladakh, enabling the region to explore its full tourism potential and become an all-year destination. He said the Government is working on constructing tunnels in Zojila and Rohthang to integrate the region with the rest of the country. The Chief Minister said this while inaugurating 3-day Singhey Khabab Sindhu festival, here yesterday. He said the festival has proved a huge success and is playing a key role in promotion of enchanting locales of Ladakh region. Minister of Tourism Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister of State for Tourism, Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Chering Dorjey and Deputy Commissioner, Leh T. Angchok were also present on the occasion. Omar said that boring of tunnel at Rohtang will commence by ending this month whereas Border Roads Organization (BRO) will prepare a Draft Project Report (DPR) for Ziofila tunnel within next one and a half year. He said the present coalition Government is committed for speedy all round development of Ladakh region assuring that all resources are being exploited for the purpose. He said Ladahk region is being linked with Northern Power Grid by laying a power transmission line costing Rs. 900 Crore. This would ensure provision of better electricity facilities in the region, Abdullah added. Omar said Ladakh's rich cultural heritage and abundance of art forms have attracted a large number of visitors to the region. He said with better connectivity, tourists will be able to visit Ladakh all the year round. "Ladakh has a lot to offer and efforts will be made to tap its full potential," the Chief Minister said while addressing the audience during the inaugural function. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Jora said Sindhu festival provides a geart opportunity to showcase Ladakh's tourism potential. He said the festival will be another attraction for the visitors, who are visiting Ladakh in large numbers. "The Government has accorded highest priority to tourism promotion in the State in all the three regions and very soon people will come to see the results on ground," he added. Nasir Aslam, while addressing the gathering, stressed on the need to create better tourism-related infrastructure and services so that more and more people visit the beautiful region of Ladakh. Welcoming the Chief Minister and other guests, CEO, LAHDC Dorje said the Sindhu Festival is proving a great boon for domestic and international arrivals to Ladakh every year. Later, a colourful cultural programme in which diverse folk dances of the State were presented was also organized.
