| Seismological observatory to be set up near LoC | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 13: A state-of-the-art seismological observatory will soon be set up near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of Kashmir. The decision to this effect has been taken due to the 2005 earthquake, which had left hundreds killed and several houses damaged in Kupwara and the adjoining Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), according to official sources. "A seismological observatory is under-construction near the LoC in Tangdhar border-belt of Kupwara, which saw death and destruction during the October 8, 2005 earthquake," the sources added. Tangdhar borders Neelam Valley of PoK, which houses Muzaffarabad, the epicentre of the 2005 earthquake. Construction was in full swing and was expected to complete in the next three months, sources said, adding, the observatory would be based on the most modern seismological gadgets armed with Geographical Information System (GIS). The state government has also proposed two more observatories - one in Rajouri district of Jammu and the other in Ganderbal district of Kashmir valley.
